Dr. Talal Reda Mahmoud had his basic medical education at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University in Egypt and graduated in 1993 with very good honours and distinction. He then successfully obtained his Master of Science in General Surgery and a PhD in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the same university in 1997 and 2002 respectively. Established in 1827, Cairo University (Kars El Aini) is one of the oldest universities in the Middle East and its Cardiothoracic Surgery Department was set up in 1958.
Upon completing his service as a House Officer at Cairo University Hospital, he became a resident at the Hospital's Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. Thereafter, he was exclusively selected to join the faculty staff as an Assistant Lecturer of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Subsequently, he was also appointed as a clinical demonstrator in Cardiothoracic ICU and heart lung machine (perfusionist). Beside his primary job as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, he also trained and supervised residents and junior faculty staff. While there, he had the privilege to assist and work with senior professors and foreign visiting surgeons such as Professor Frigiola and Menicanti from San Donato Hospital, Italy. He had also received training for two years at the Paediatric Hospital which was established and funded by the Japanese in Egypt for congenital heart diseases surgery. Additionally, he joined many foreign institutions to upgrade his skill and knowledge. Among them was the Medical University of Vienna where he gained good experience in Aortic surgeries and complicated open heart procedures in adults such as TAVI Procedures and Aortic valve sparing procedures.
His passion to help patients has brought him to different countries. He joined one of the biggest military hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as a Senior Registrar in 2005 and had good surgical experience. In 2006, he was given a position as a consultant and head of El Thora Government Heart Center in Sanaa, Yemen. While there, he performed more than 100 cases of heart and lung surgeries before he decided to join Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) in Kuala Lumpur in 2007. His stint in HUKM gave him the opportunity to teach medical students and the Masters Degree students and also provide medical and surgical services. Prior to joining Penang Adventist Hospital, Dr Talal was a Consultant and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery with the Saudi German Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is currently a registered Consultant with the Egyptian Medical Council and a registered medical practitioner with the Malaysian Medical Council as well as the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
Being a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr Talal is well-trained in performing all types of chest and heart surgeries, including those for malignancies and traumas. His special interest lies in total arterial surgery of CABG and aortic valve surgeries. Dr Talal specialises in employing conventional, on pump, off pump, or total arterial Y and T grafts using radial and mammary arteries in performing coronary artery bypass grafting. In addition, he is also skilled in valvular heart diseases surgery, valve repairs and replacements, and most types of aortic aneurysms.
Dr Talal has also authored several case reports and review articles in international medical journals, including The American Annals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Heart Surgery Forum. He is also an avid participant at both local and international cardiothoracic and cardiovascular meetings.
Presently, Dr Talal is a member of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS), Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (ASCVTS) based in Tokyo, Japan, Egyptian Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) of United States of America. He is also an American Heart Association (AHA) certified Basic Life support provider and an AHA certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider.
