Dr. Murugan is our Resident Consultant General and Minimally Invasive Surgeon. He obtained his MD from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1994 and his postgraduate Masters of Surgery from UKM in 2001. He also obtained a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS - Ireland & Edinburgh).

Dr Murugan was the resident General, Endo-Laparoscopic and Thoracic Surgeon in Penang General Hospital (PGH) from 2008 to 2011. He is skilled in the entire spectrum of general surgical conditions, and performs conventional and minimally invasive surgery relating to the gastrointestinal tract (including the esophagus, stomach, small & large intestine, rectum and anus), thyroid, breasts, abdominal hernias and skin lesions. He is also skilled in performing therapeutic endoscopy such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreoticogram and bronchoscope.

Dr Murugan pursued his subspecialty interest in Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery with training at University Kebangsaan Malaysia, University Malaya Medical Center and Ipoh General Hospital. He completed his fellowship training in Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery in New Delhi, India. He also obtained fellowship training in thoracoscopic surgery while in Singapore and Japan. Dr Murugan is one of the few surgeons in Malaysia offering advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery.

Dr Murugan was the head of the endoscopic unit in Ipoh General Hospital and has treated thousands of patients via endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. He introduced various advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures in government hospitals from 2003 onwards and was the visiting endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeon for Seberang Jaya, Teluk Intan, Slim River, Manjong and Taiping hospital. He was presented with a Service Excellence Award by the Ministry of Health for his outstanding clinical service.

Dr Murugan has been the invited faculty in many local and international conferences. He is affiliated to various professional bodies, including the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) and the Asia Pacific Hernia Society. He actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, serving as honorary lecturer for the National University of Malaysia, Penang Medical College, Penang Dental College, Perak Royal Medical College and is an examiner for the MRCS exams.

Dr Murugan is fluent in Malay, English and Tamil
