Dr Lim Shyang Yee obtained his undergraduate medical degree at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1999. After fulfilling his basic physician training, he continued to pursue a Master of Medicine in General Surgery at his alma mater.
Upon completing his postgraduate general surgery training, Dr Lim served as a General Surgeon at the Penang General Hospital from 2007-2011. He subsequently went on to pursue his Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery training in Johor Bahru, Seremban and Sungai Buloh. He completed his Clinical Fellowship in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital, The University of Hong Kong under the Malaysian Ministry of Health Subspecialty Training programme.
Upon completion of his training, Dr Lim returned to serve at Penang General Hospital as a Consultant General & Upper GI Surgeon. He was the Head of Endoscopy Unit, Surgical Nutrition Support Team and Surgical Oncology Multidisciplinary team (MDT). He has served as the Head of Department for General Surgery at Penang General Hospital and National Head of the Upper GI Surgery Service and Training for the Malaysian Ministry of Health.
Dr Lim is competent at managing a wide range of general and upper GI surgical procedures. He performs various general surgical procedures of thyroid, breast, abdominal hernias and gastrointestinal diseases. His experience includes handling wide spectrum of surgeries for oesophageal diseases, gastrectomy for peptic ulcer complications, radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, anti-reflux surgeries, laparoscopic surgeries, therapeutic endoscopic procedures and upper GI physiology studies.
He has given numerous presentations at both local and international meetings. He is an avid clinical researcher in the gastrointestinal field. Dr Lim is a clinical lecturer in clinical teaching of medical students from the Penang Medical College, an instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and a trainer of the Malaysian Upper GI Surgery Training Committee.
Dr Lim is a member of various professional bodies, the Society of Surgeons, Penang, Malaysian Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Society (MUGIS), Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (MSGH) and International Society for Disease of Esophagus (ISDE).
Dr Lim is fluent in English, Malay, Mandarin and Cantonese.
