Dr Prem Kumar Chandrasekaran

Dr. Prem, our Consultant NeuroBehavioural Physician, graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.,B.S.) from Kasturba Medicine College, Manipal in 1993. He went on to obtain his Masters in Psychological Medicine (M.Psych.Med.) from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 2000.

Dr. Prem's working experience began in 1994 as a Houseman and subsequently, a Medical Officer in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu. He then went on to serve as a Trainee Psychiatrist with attachments in Clinical Neurology and Anaesthesiology in University Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 1996 to 2000, with a brief attachment with Imperial College at St. Charles Hospital, London in 1999. He then worked as a Clinical Specialist in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). He now runs the NeuroBehavioural Medicine Unit at Penang Adventist Hospital where he mainly practices Biological Psychiatry after getting accredited for ECT and Psychopharmacology, by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK and the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum in France, in 2003 and 2004 respectively. He was admitted into the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (AMM) in 2004 and inducted in 2005. He completed his subspecialization fellowship training in Neuropsychiatry with the University of Melbourne at St. Vincent's Hospital in 2006 and 2007 and has begun to operate a fortnightly Neuropsychiatric clinic for medico-legal cases.

Dr. Prem is available for the management of mood and anxiety disorders, psychoses, dementias and other medically-induced illnesses, and provides admission facilities for acute psychiatric care (including administration of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) with the latest machine) and detoxification of substances of abuse. Being trained in the IT-driven assessment techniques and conducting clinical studies has enabled him to explore the grey areas of Organic Psychiatry and he is a well-known speaker and trainer in this field. Many of his articles have been featured and published in prominent international and local journals and magazines.
