Dr Kooi received his primary and secondary schooling in Penang after which he took up medicine at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He graduated with a degree of Medical Doctor (MD) in UKM, Kuala Lumpur in 1993. After serving several years in government hospitals as house and medical officers, he then pursued a Master in radiology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Kelantan and obtained his specialty in 2000.
Dr Kooi's professional experience began in 2000 when he worked as a clinical radiologist in Penang General Hospital. He was then transferred to Hospital Sungai Petani and promoted as Head Radiologist, Department of Diagnostic Imaging for about a year before joining Penang Adventist Hospital in early 2001.
Dr Kooi conducts various radiological procedures like ultrasound, fluoroscopy, mammogram, CT scan and MRI. He is trained in basic intervention procedures like biopsy, drainage of abscesses, doppler ultrasound, diagnostic angiogram and nuclear medicine. He has experience in reporting cardiac CT and MRI, as well as breast MRIs. He attended the 2nd Congress of Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (ASCI) & the 4th Singapore CT Coronary Angiography Teaching Course 2008. He also completed the Digital Imaging Clerkship Program from 15 to 19, August 2005, at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. in the PAH radiology department uses AGFA PACS and Versalius RIS(radiology information system), giving Dr Kooi the use of state-of-the-art technology that transforms the way radiological images are viewed, analysed, stored and shared, enabling him to diagnose more efficiently.
Dr Kooi is a member of the College of Radiology, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the Malaysia Medical Association. He is fluent in English, Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese and is married with two sons.
