Dr Gokula Kumar Appalanaido
Visiting Consultant Radiation Oncologist

Dr Gokula Kumar Appalanaido studied medicine at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Kelantan. He did his internship training at the Teluk Intan Hospital and thereafter, boast the experience of working in 8 healthcare facilities in Malaysia. His multidisciplinary specialty experiences include primary health, O&G, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and also senior Orthopaedics medical officer before he joined the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, USM Bertam as a trainee in Oncology to pursue his studies in the field of Radiation Oncology.

Thereafter, under the Public Services Department (PSD) sponsored advanced Oncology training scholarship, Dr Gokula left the country in 2008 for the next 5 years, during which time he worked at the famous National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore for the first 3 years of his training and subsequently at the history-rich William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, Alfred Health, Melbourne for the next 2 years to complete the compulsory 5-year Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Consultant Radiation Oncologist training programme. He was awarded the Fellowship in Radiation Oncology (FRANZCR) by RANZCR upon passing the exit examination and completing the Royal College's training requirement.

Dr Gokula is the first Australian (FRANZCR) trained Radiation Oncologist to practice as a Consultant Oncologist in Malaysia. His primary interest is low dose rate interstitial seed brachytherapy for prostate cancers, head & neck conformal/ intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Gynaecological brachytherapy (interstitial and intracavitary) and translational molecular cancer research. Dr Gokula's publication includes international citation indexed journals and has contributed vastly to the field of Oncology. He is also selected as an editor for international journals. Dr Gokula is also a member of the prestigious ASTRO (American Society for Radiation Oncology).

Upon returning to Malaysia in 2013, Dr Gokula takes pride in heading a team that had successfully set up the AMDI-USM cancer centre from scratch. The efficiency and target oriented professionalism in setting up the full-fledged AMDI-USM cancer centre despite being the only Radiation Oncologist at that point in AMDI-USM is a pride that he carries. Dr Gokula has vast experience with state-of-the-art Radiotherapy facilities and currently performs advanced procedures such as IMRT, Dynamic Arc therapy, prostate interstitial brachytherapy, HDR prostate brachytherapy, gynaecological interstitial and intracavitary HDR brachytherapy at AMDI-USM.

Dr Gokula is currently still practicing as a Senior Medical Lecturer and Specialist in Radiotherapy & Oncology at the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Bertam, Penang. He also spends some of his quality time attending to patients requiring his care at Penang Adventist Hospital as a Visiting Consultant Radiation Oncologist.
