Dr. Gooi is our Resident Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon. He obtained his MBBS from University Malaya in 1996 and his postgraduate Fellowship from Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Ireland) in 2000.
Dr Gooi served as the resident General Surgeon in Penang General Hospital (PGH) from 2000 to 2005. He is skilled in the entire spectrum of general surgical conditions and performs operative procedures relating to the thyroid, breasts, gastrointestinal tract (including the stomach, small & large intestine, rectum and anus), abdominal hernias and skin lesions.
He pursued his subspecialty interest in Colorectal Surgery with training in various national colorectal centres including Hospital Alor Star, hospital Kuala Lumpur and UKM Medical Centre. He completed his subspecialty training in Hull Colorectal Unit, United Kingdom where he was trained in Laparoscopic ("key hole") Colectomy. He is one of the few colorectal surgeons in Malaysia offering this advanced level specialised treatment for colorectal cancer. Dr Gooi is skilled in other minimally invasive surgical procedures including minimal invasive ano-rectal surgery and therapeutic colonoscopy.
Dr Gooi set up the colorectal unit of PGH after returning from Hull in 2009. He has treated hundreds of patients with colorectal cancers as well as haemorrhoids and anal fistulas. He was head of endoscopic unit in PGH and has performed thousands of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies. His outstanding clinical service has seen him as a regular receiver of Service Excellence Awards awarded by the Health Department of Penang State.
Dr Gooi is member of various professional bodies, serving also as Deputy Chairman for the Society of Surgeons in Penang and Honorary advisor for Penang Stoma Society. He actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, serving as a honorary lecturer for Penang Medical College and an examiner for the MRCS exams.
Dr Gooi is fluent in Malay, English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese.
