Dr Ajay Kumar Sharma is one of our Resident Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeons. He completed his primary and secondary schooling at St Xavier's Institution, Penang and graduated from Mangalore University in 1994 with the MBBS degree. He further pursued his career and obtained a Masters of Orthopaedic and Traumatology degree after completing his specialisation from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2002.
Dr Sharma served in various positions as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Government hospitals in Malaysia and as a lecturer at both the Asian Institute for Medical Science and Techonology (AIMST, Sungai Petani) and Perak Medical College.
He has completed specialised training in hip and knee replacements and also hip resurfacing arthroplasty in Korea and the UK.
Dr Sharma was in Munich, Germany and Colorado, USA for the entire duration of 2007 to complete his training in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery majoring in Microscopic and Endoscopic Spine Surgery. Among the surgeries that he was trained to do are microdiskectomy for disc prolapse, micro decompression surgery for spinal stenosis, minimally invasive surgeries for fusion of the cervical and lumbar spine, total disc replacement arthroplasty, congenital and degenerative scoliosis deformities, kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, and fractures of the spine.
He is also trained in interventional pain and diagnostic procedures like discography and disc analgesia, facet and nerve root blocks for a painful spine, epidural and SI joint blocks, denevation and nerve root ablation for intractable neuropathic pain, nucleoplasty and annuloplasty.
He has special interest in Illizarov bone transport and limb salvage for infected bones.
He speaks fluent English, Malay, Hindi, Punjabi and Hokkien.
Dr Sharma leads an active lifestyle. His hobbies include scuba diving, squash and badminton.
