ABOUT US

Mended Hearts is a non-profit organization committed in helping heart disease patients and families or caregivers to deal with the emotional recovery from heart disease.

  • This organization is composed of a very special group of people: heart patients, spouses, health professionals and other interested individuals.
  • The first “Mended Hearts” were two men and two women recovering from heart surgery in 1950. They felt a need (as we do today) to help others facing the same heart-mending procedures and decided to form Mended Hearts in the United States of America in 1955.
  • Today, membership has grown to thousands and continues to grow each year with over 200 chapters across the United States and one chapter in Canada.

Being the pioneer to heart surgeries in Northern Malaysia, the community of Penang Adventist Hospital realised that there are no formal support groups for heart patients in Malaysia. With the acknowledgement and authorisation given by Mended Hearts Inc., we are proud to start a new chapter in Penang: Mended Hearts Penang.

OBJECTIVES

The Mended Hearts Penang offers help, support and encouragement to heart disease patients and their families through the following ways:

  • Distribute information of specific educational value to members of the support group, patients and their families.
  • Hospital visitation / counseling on request by trained personnel.
  • Establish and maintain a program of assistance to physicians, nurses, medical professionals and health care organizations in their work with patients and families.
  • Establish and assist heart disease rehabilitation programs for members and their families.
  • Cooperating with other organizations in education and research activities pertaining to heart disease.
  • Plan and conduct suitable programs of social and educational interest for members, patients and their families.
CONCEPTS

Who can be helped?

Patients who have underlying cardiovascular problems and require treatment or surgery can benefit from Mended Hearts support.

Heart treatments and surgeries are designed to improve quality of life; however, the healing of the physical and emotional aspects takes a longer time. It is normal for patients and families to be concerned and anxious or feel anger, frustration and depression during this adjustment period.

This is where Mended Hearts Penang is available to provide timely help.

How can we help?

Currently, you (heart patients or the family members, medical and health professionals) can visit our center. We carefully train members to visit recovering patients. It is often inspiring for the patients to see a healthy mended heart enter the hospital room. They provide the added strength the patient may need to overcome many doubts and fears. “Helping others” is what it is all about.

Peer Group Support Service

Objective
As heart patients who have successfully undergone bypass surgery or angioplasty, our experiences may be helpful in reassuring and supporting patients who are about to undergo the same procedures. The same assistance can also be extended to patients’ family members.

Advantage of Service

Getting advice and information from successful heart patients is quite different from hearing the same from cardiologists, surgeon or hospital counselors. The real experience of Mended Hearts members should have a different degree of credibility.

Mechanics of the Service

  • Volunteers from among the Mended Hearts members and other successful heart patients will be sought.
  • A short training session will be provided by Adventist doctors and other staff.
  • The service will be disseminated to all heart patients before they undergo surgery or angioplasty. Patients will decide on their own if they wish to avail themselves of this service. They can also indicate their preferences like wanting a volunteer who is female or male, a particular religious faith etc.
  • Volunteers will make themselves available no more than once a week for about 2 hours.

SPECIAL EVENTS

WORLD HEART DAY 2015

World Heart Day was founded in 2000 and celebrated annually to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year.

Overeating, lack of exercise, unhealthy diets, high blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels are all factors which can trigger heart disease and threaten our own lives, and those of loved ones.

Mended Hearts Penang (MHP), a support group for heart patients collaborated with Community Development to raise awareness on heart disease and drive home the message that heart problems can be prevented.

This year, we celebrated World Heart Day on 27 Sept 2015 in Penang Times Square. Our guests of honour include YB Zairil Khir Johari, MP Bukit Bendera, YB Yap Soo Huey, State Assemblywoman for Pulau Tikus and Dr Wesley Toh, CEO of Penang Adventist Hospital.

The event started with FREE health screening where 100 pax had their glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index checked. This was followed by a health talk “How to mend a broken heart” by Dr Talal Reda Mahmoud, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. There was a Q&A session to further enforce Dr Talal’s talk.

The highlight of the day is the “Skip for Fun & Fund” rope skipping competition to raise funds for needy heart patients who cannot afford surgery. Skipping may be old fashioned but the art of skipping rope is being heralded as one of the best exercises for keeping a spring in our steps longer. It works wonders for the heart, bones, coordination, balance and brain.

There were 3 categories: Pledge & Skip, Most skips in 5 mins and Most creative skips. The atmosphere was tense and electrifying as the competitors compete amongst themselves to win the top cash prizes.

MHP gave away a hamper to the healthiest MHP member who completed their food & exercise diary. This is to motivate our members to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

The event ended with a lucky draw for the participants of the rope skipping competition.

WORLD HEART DAY 2014

World Heart Day is the largest global awareness and advocacy campaign on heart disease and stroke, reaching almost 2 billion people in over 120 countries through organized events and media outreach.

An objective of World Heart Day 2014 is to empower individuals and communities to call for environments that enable them to make positive choices for their heart health. This World Heart Day calls on individuals and communities to advocate for heart-healthy environments, and for governments to champion and implement policies in these areas.

In conjunction with World Heart Day 2014, Penang Adventist Hospital organized a 3 in 1 event endorsed by the Penang State Government, supported by Mended Hearts, a support group for heart patients and 3 Lions Club of Penang. This event which attracted approx 1000 pax consists of: Cycle for Hearts, Selfie with Hearts and Fund raising for Patient Heart Fund.

The main highlight is the “Cycle for Hearts” where we promote healthy lifestyle by encouraging the public to cycle 20km from the Georgetown Heritage Site to Straits Quay and back. Those who could not cycle can join “Selfie with Hearts” a treasure hunt on foot around Georgetown Heritage Site where they have to take “Selfie” with the answers.

In line with this year’s objective, the Georgetown Heritage Site has been gazette by the Penang State Government as a Smoke free zone as well as a Car free day on Sunday mornings.

The event was flagged off by YB Chong Eng, Ahli Parliament Bukit Mertajam and Dr Wesley Toh, CEO of Penang Adventist Hospital. In addition to the Zumba exercises which lasted more than 2 hours, there was basic health screening for those who are health conscious. All registered participants are entitled to a lucky draw and goody bag. The event ended with the lucky draw of the top 3 prizes of a 3D2N cruise to Phuket/Krabi.

WORLD HEART DAY 2013

The “12 Hour Puasa 2 Save Hearts” event, held in conjunction with World Heart Day 2013, was the culmination of the 89 days “Skip Meals 4 Charity” campaign held from 18 June to 14 September 2013.

The “Puasa” event held on 15 September was launched by a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a release of numerous balloons from a human heart formation. VIPs include YB Yap Soo Huey, ADUN of Pulau Tikus and YB Phee Boon Poh.

The whole day event was filled with activities to keep the crowd entertained. On the stage there were various performances such as singing, dancing, martial arts, chinese Yo Yo, body exercise and zumba by children. There were 2 health talks, “Metabolic Pathways leading to Heart Disease” by Dr Anderson and “7 Secrets of Longevity” by Dr Dicky.

On the ground, there were charity jumble fair, various workshops such as balloon twisting, batik printing & calligraphy, health screening and participation from various NGOs. There were 3 sessions allocated for lucky draws worth over RM25,000! The first and grand prize of “4D/3N to Phuket-Krabi” sponsored by Star Cruise went to our own staff Evelyn Chen from Material Management!

40 Girl Guides lent their support for the event by having a campfire and sing-along sessions, followed by a candle lighting ceremony to mark the end of this significant event.

Both events, organized by Mended Hearts Penang together with Community Development, raised RM223,619 for the Heart Patients Fund with a total of 1,640 participants. Monies from our Heart Patients Fund are channeled to help needy heart patients who otherwise cannot afford heart surgery.
